The Swiss architect Edmond Fatio (1871-1959) assembled a large and varied group of drawings, with a particular emphasis on studies for architecture, decoration and ornament. His collection was made up primarily of 17th and 18th century drawings of all schools. Fatio’s collection of drawings, including the present sheet, was dispersed at auction in Geneva in 1959.

The present sheet then entered the collection of some two hundred drawings, of various schools, assembled by the German-born collector Curtis O. Baer (1898-1976). Most of Baer’s drawings were acquired after the Second World War, mainly between 1950 and 1960, and several sheets are today in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
