Drawings by Lorenzo Lippi are relatively rare – less than thirty drawings are known – and cannot always be related to extant paintings by the artist. This drawing is a study for a seated young girl in one of the spandrels beneath Lippi’s fresco of The Crowning of the Virgin, painted in 1643 for the ceiling of the Cappella Ardinghelli in the church of Santi Michele e Gaetano in Florence. Another red chalk drawing by Lippi for a different child in the same fresco is in the collection of the Martin von Wagner Museum at the University of Würzburg.
