Boutet de Monvel was himself a well-known dandy, known for his innate style and elegant dress sense. As the illustrator Georges Lepape wrote, in a letter of November 1926 from New York: ‘Since we arrived a week ago we’ve seen a lot of Bernard Boutet de Monvel and his brother Roger. We often go out or go to receptions together, and the other night at midnight Bernard and I were in topper and tails on a bus in Fifth Avenue; it was hilarious.’
