Relatively little is known of the artist and draughtsman Konrad Böse, who was a follower (and may have been a pupil) of Adolph von Menzel. Böse worked in Berlin and began to establish his reputation around 1885. In 1909 he is known to have exhibited a large number of drawings in Berlin. He was also active as a professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts, where among his pupils was the painter Erich Wolfsfeld.

Among the contents of the artist’s studio at his death, with the Böse atelier stamp Nachlass / K. Böse, not in Lugt, stamped on the verso An unidentified collector’s mark, with the letters C(?)K in a circle, not in Lugt, stamped in green ink on the verso.
