Renoir’s freely-drawn watercolour landscapes of this type are generally dated between 1895 and 1900. This watercolour may have been acquired directly from the artist’s heirs by the commissaire-priseur Alphonse Bellier, one of the leading auctioneers in Paris between the 1920’s and the 1950’s. The drawing was later in the collection of the French writer, art historian and critic Claude Roger-Marx (1888-1977).
