This drawing was likely to have been intended to have been engraved as an illustration for a botanical publication. Two related drawings of mushrooms by the same hand, of similar dimensions and almost certainly part of the same series, recently appeared at auction in Paris.

A tentative attribution to the German botanical illustrator Georg Wilhelm Baurenfeind (1728-1763) may be suggested.
