Nothing is known about the artist who executed and signed this striking head study in pastel and gouache. F. (or perhaps T?) Bourgarel does not appear in any biographical dictionaries, and was in all likelihood an amateur artist. The artist may have never exhibited his (or her?) work in public, which would further explain the lack of extant information associated with the name. The present sheet can approximately be dated to the late 19th century, and may have been drawn in one of the French colonies in North Africa.
