ENQUIRE

Both sides of the present sheet contain studies for John Adam Houston’s large painting A Night Alarm in the Cavalier Camp of 1884, today in the collection of the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. One of Houston’s last works, the painting was exhibited posthumously at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1885, and was presented to that institution by the artist’s descendants in 1909. The crouching figure in the centre of the drawing can be seen to the right of the central standing figure in the painting, while the hands drawn on either side correspond to those of the standing figure in the centre of the painting. On the verso of the sheet, Houston studied the belt-buckling gesture of the main figure, this time with the hands brought closer together.
