An identical head, of similar dimensions to the present sheet, appears on the right half of a drawing of the heads of a man and a woman, which was on the art market in London in 1974 with an attribution to Gaetano Gandolfi. Stylistically comparable heads can be found in a sheet of studies by Mauro Gandolfi in the collection of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice.
Émile Pierre Victor Calando, Paris and Grasse (said to have had his inventory number 1548 inscribed in pencil on the former mount), and probably by descent to Marguerite Calando.
