Karl-Ernest-Rudolph-Heinrich Salem LEHMANN (Kiel 1814 - Paris 1882)
Study of a Standing Draped Man
Black chalk and brown wash. Laid down.
Dated sept 43(?) in brown ink at the lower left.
225 x 109 mm. (8 7/8 x 4 1/4 in.)
This drawing may possibly be a first idea for one of the standing figures at the extreme right edge of Lehmann’s large painting of The Baptism of Christ for the church of Saint-Merri in Paris, executed between 1842 and 1844. A somewhat similar study of a standing man facing to the left, drawn in charcoal and dated 1842, is in a private Parisian collection.
