Drawn during a visit to London in 1872, this striking portrait may be grouped with a handful of similar drawings of the same date and technique by Laugée. These include a closely comparable charcoal portrait of a woman, possibly depicting the same sitter (who is identified as a ‘Mrs. Clover’), which was on the art market in London in 1981 and is now in a private collection, while a similar portrait drawing of an elderly woman - signed, dated and inscribed ‘London / Jany 1871’ – is today in a private collection in London. Also alike in style and handling is a charcoal portrait drawing of Edward Bulwer, Lord Lytton of Knebworth of 1872, in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.
