ENQUIRE

As a youth, before he settled on a career as an artist, Johan Briedé had considered becoming a botanist or zoologist, and this interest in plants and animals is found in much of his later work as a draughtsman. He produced numerous drawings and watercolours of plants and nature studies, and this lifelong love of nature is readily evident in this large Forest with Deer, dated 1914, which also evokes an interest in the Art Nouveau manner typical of the period. In keeping with much of the artist’s work, there are no human figures to be seen.

Provenance:
Private collection, Holland.
