Théodore Gudin’s drawings in sepia wash and watercolour were much admired for their atmospheric depictions of stormy seas, placid waters, sunsets and harbour scenes by moonlight, and were avidly acquired by collectors and connoisseurs throughout Europe.

Dated the 14th of October 1841, the present sheet bears the artist’s dedication to Louise Montefiore (1821-1910), who had married Sir Anthony Nathan de Rothschild, later 1st Baronet de Rothschild (1810-1876), the previous year.
