A fine example of the exquisite draughtsmanship of Mauro Gandolfi, this is one of a group of elaborate pen and ink drawings of studies of heads that were probably made as autonomous works of art for sale to collectors. Mauro is here carrying on a tradition begun by his father Gaetano Gandolfi, who produced a large number of finished pen and ink drawings of studies of heads.
