A preparatory study for Anton Mauve's painting De melkbocht (The Milking Yard) of c.1878 in the Groninger Museum in Groningen, the present sheet can also be closely related to a large watercolour of a nearly identical composition, in the same collection.The Amsterdam accountant Jan Frederik Bianchi (1878-1963) assembled a fine and extensive collection of drawings and prints dating from the 16th to the 19th century, as well as books and Japanese prints.
