The subject of this small drawing is typical of the genre scenes produced by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin. Although the hard-edged penwork is slightly unusual for the artist, the drawing is quite close - in style, technique and handling - to the myriad small sketches with which he illustrated numerous sale and exhibition catalogues.
