The precise chronology of Della Bella’s landscape drawings remains to be established, and studies such as this are difficult to date, although Anthony Blunt - in his catalogue of drawings in the Royal Collection – suggested that they should be dated to the artist’s later Roman period, after 1650. Similar drawings of trees by Della Bella are in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, and elsewhere.
