Drawn in November 1785 while Klinsky was a student in Dresden, this is an early work by the artist, then aged twenty. Among the handful of extant non-architectural drawings by the artist is a landscape in Saxony which, like the present sheet, was also in the Strähuber collection. The present sheet was once part of the collection of drawings, prints and books assembled by the physician Dr. Anton Strähuber (1877-1939), who was the grandson of the Munich history painter Alexander Strähuber (1814-1882), from whom he may have inherited the drawing.
