Further inscribed “Bamboo Grove” 1951 / painted in egg Tempera / by Eliot Hodgkin on a label pasted onto the reverse of the old frame.

A study for a larger painting entitled The Bamboo Grove on an Island near Ascona on Lake Maggiore, painted between 1952 and 1956 and today in the Government Art Collection. The painting depicts a view near Ascona in Switzerland, near the border with Italy. The artist had originally depicted his wife and son standing in the foreground of the composition, but later painted them out.
