Algernon Newton worked extensively in watercolour in the early years of his career. In its quiet understatement, the present sheet is a typical example of the artist’s precise watercolour technique.Newton painted at least one other view of London’s great cathedral; a painting entitled St. Paul’s Rising out of the Fog, exhibited at a London gallery in 1951.
