Franz Skarbina visited Capri in 1883, and like many German artists stayed at the Hotel Pagano, the first hotel established on the island. This watercolour depicts a beach on the small, sheltered bay of Marina Piccola, on the south side of the island. Facing the three sea stacks known as the Faraglioni, the beach was a favourite bathing spot in the 19th century and continues to be very popular today. Only a handful of watercolours by the artist from this brief stay in Capri are known.
